Candelilla Wax
Candelilla Wax (pronounced can-deh-LEE-ya) is a plant-derived wax obtained from the Euphorbia cerifera shrub, native to desert regions. Its name, meaning “little candle,” reflects its early use in candle making and the wax-coated, upright stems of the plant.
In nature, candelilla wax forms a protective outer layer on the plant, helping to reduce moisture loss and protect against harsh environmental conditions. These same barrier-forming qualities make it a valued ingredient in topical formulations.
Because it is plant-based, candelilla wax is well suited for vegan and beeswax-free formulations. It is commonly used as a texturizing, thickening, and stabilizing agent in lip balms, lotion bars, salves, creams, and other solid or semi-solid cosmetic products.
Candelilla wax blends easily with other waxes, including carnauba wax and paraffin, and is often used as a beeswax alternative. It contributes firmness, smooth texture, and surface shine while maintaining good spreadability.
