Citrine is a pale or golden yellow to honey or brown colored variety of quartz that may contain sparkle or rainbow inclusions. Its name derives from the Latin word "citrina," meaning "yellow." It is rare in nature and the second most desirable quartz gemstone after amethyst. Most of the citrine that you see on the market today is actually heat-treated smoky quartz or amethyst and comes in orange or reddish brown hues, as opposed to the more naturally occurring yellow to orange-yellow coloration.
