Also known as "rubellite," pink tourmaline is a beautiful crystal that may vary widely in color between light pink and deep red. It may also range in clarity from transparent to opaque. It is one of the most valuable and sought after variations of tourmaline. All tourmaline is famous for its properties of being pyro-electric and piezoelectric, which means that it can become electrically charged upon being rubbed or heated. In fact, in the 1700s, dutch traders used it for the purpose of pulling ash from their pipes, nicknaming it "aschentrekker" ("ash puller").

Tourmaline belongs to the aluminum borosilicate family and can appear in a rainbow of colors depending on the proportions of components present in a given specimen. Several colors may even be present in a single crystal, as is the case for the beautiful watermelon tourmaline. Tourmaline crystals tend to be uniquely triangular, vertically striated, and prismatic. They may be thick and columnar or long and slender. Although tourmaline has been found on every continent of the earth, fine gems are still rare and are often rather expensive on the market. The pink to red variety, in particular, is often heat treated to enhance its color. However, this fact does not currently impact its value-- in part because irradiation is nearly impossible to detect in these crystals.

In the metaphysical world, pink tourmaline is associated with the element of water and the heart chakra. It is known for its soothing effects, due to its radiation of the feminine energies of nurturing, relaxation, calm, comfort, safety, tolerance and kindness. Handling it, keeping it near and/or wearing it set in jewelry regularly is believed to aid one to alleviate negative behaviors and feelings, provide emotional cleansing and balance, promote spiritual growth, and heal deep seated emotional wounds.

If your goal is to restore lost love, try combining pink tourmaline with dioptase, malachite, rhodonite, rhodochrosite, kunzite, morganite, and/or rose quartz to magnify its effects. If you need to lessen worry, stress or obsessive behaviors, combine it with black tourmaline. Many people also claim that its presence appears to reduce the occurrence of falls for all age groups, making it popular among the elderly and parents with toddlers learning to walk.

Pink tourmaline also offers many benefits to the world of physical healing. Its influence appears to be beneficial to the nervous, endocrine, circulatory and reproductive systems. Crystal healers have claimed success in using it in the treatment of imbalance within the hemispheres of the brain, excessive paranoia and fear, dyslexia, spinal injuries and problems, migraines, neuralgia, a range of gynecological conditions, irregular heartbeat, angina, and heart attack recovery. Pink tourmaline may also help to address disorders of the skin and lungs and prove particularly useful to those trying to conceive a child or who are going through puberty (whether male or female).
