Blue topaz is a brilliant watery-blue colored gemstone that has experienced an increased demand over recent years, but topaz in general has a history dating back over two thousand years into the Egyptian times, when it was believed that the sun god, Ra, gave yellow topaz its golden color. It is an aluminum silicate mineral containing fluorine and hydroxyl. Its crystal system is orthorhombic and the crystals themselves are usually prismatic. It is transparent to translucent and has a famous vitreous lustre. It exhibits a hardness of 8 on the Mohs scale and a high clarity with few inclusions, contributing to its popularity in the jewelry market. However, it displays perfect cleavage, which means it is at high risk for cracking or breaking and must be protected from blows. It compliments every skin tone. Its distinct color is akin to the blue of aquamarine, but lacking the green overtones.

In it's natural form, blue topaz is quite rare, so most blue topaz that you see on the market started out as gray, pale yellow, pale blue or colorless and was enhanced via heat treatment and irradiation to produce a more desirable deep blue color. In natural form, variations in color are caused by impurities in the topaz. Aside from the aforementioned colors, topaz has also been found in orange, pink, red, red-brown, light green and violet. Because of its numerous color variations, topaz if often mistaken for many other gemstones. Topaz is found in many different places around the world, including the US, South Africa, Brazil, Sweden, Italy, Afghanistan, Norway, Check Republic, Russia, Germany, Japan, Pakistan, India, Australia, Sri Lanka, and Mexico.

Blue topaz is associated with the month of December, the state of Texas, and the 4th wedding anniversary. Like the Egyptians, the Romans associated this gemstone with the sun god Ra. According to traditional indian belief, topaz resonates with the throat chakra, which is concerned with self-expression and communication. Consequently, it might be especially valuable to public speakers, artists, actors, writers, and the like, as it might heighten their abilities, making their communication and expression more effective and meaningful. Some say it also promotes clear thinking and concentration, aiding both in small tasks and major life decisions. It may make us more aware of our feelings, thoughts and actions, and of the karmic effects of them.

Wearers claim that it helps with writer's block and aids in creativity. Blue topaz also resonates with the third eye chakra, which means that it may help one's thinking ability and give a boost to brain power. It is said to be a strong psychic communication, meditation, and visualization mineral, as well. Wearers maintain that topaz holds the power to increase the overall strength of the entire physical body, because it can supposedly remove stagnant energies and redirect the body's energies to the places where it is most needed. Specific claims include decrease of stress and promotion of rejuvenation, increased virility in men, aid in blood disorders, endocrine problems, asthma and thrombosis.
